VERNON, Conn. (AP) - Police in Connecticut say a New York City man has been arrested for choking his girlfriend and threatening to kill her.

Vernon police say they received a call just before 5 a.m. Saturday from a woman who reported her boyfriend had assaulted her and was still inside her apartment.

Police say 23-year-old Tyree Alford had a large knife in his hand when officers arrived. Police say Alford resisted arrest and was tackled to the ground.

Police determined Alford was highly intoxicated. An investigation determined he became upset with the victim, choked her and threatened to kill her. Alford later told officers he wished they had killed him.

Alford is being held in lieu of a $150,000 surety bond. He’s due in court Monday.

It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer.
