PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has scheduled an 80-hour closure of a bridge in East Providence so it can be replaced.

The East Shore Expressway Bridge was closed at 9 p.m. Friday. It’s scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Tuesday.

DOT says it’s accelerating the project to avoid significant delays and congestion for East Bay residents and businesses.

DOT plans to remove a 17-ton weight limit that was put in place because of significant concrete cracking.

The bridge carries traffic from Interstate 195 East’s Exit 7 to the East Shore Expressway southbound.

The nearby McCormick Quarry Bridge is scheduled to be replaced later this month.

Both bridges were built in 1959. DOT says it will cost about $16.7 million to replace both.
