JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi State Department of Health has named a new state epidemiologist.

Dr. Paul Byers, who most recently served as deputy state epidemiologist, will replace Dr. Thomas Dobbs, who resigned to spend more time with his family.

Byers has been with the department since 1993. During his tenure, he’s served as a staff physician in Public Health District V, medical director of the Office of Epidemiology, acting state epidemiologist and has filled in as acting district health officer in several districts.

State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier, in a news release Thursday announcing the promotion, says Byers will be a great asset in the new position, citing his local and statewide perspective, intelligence and ability to work with all disciplines and personalities.
