JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) - East Tennessee State University is the nation’s first higher education institution to be designated an Indoor Tan-Free Skin Smart Campus by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention.

According to the school, ETSU was selected because of its record of research and advocacy around skin cancer prevention and indoor tanning dangers.

ETSU’s Dr. Katie Baker says college students have the highest indoor tanning rates of any population. But she says it can be hard to work with young people on cancer prevention because the disease often happens later in life.

In addition to education, ETSU has agreed to prohibit indoor tanning on campus and not allow tanning salons to be listed as off-campus merchants on student debit cards. The school also won’t promote off-campus housing with indoor tanning.
