WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A man accused of beating another man to death in West Greenwich and assaulting responding police officers in May has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges, and his lawyer says he was insane at the time.

Thirty-four-year-old Christian Lepore of Richmond entered the pleas Friday morning in Kent County Superior Court and was again ordered held without bail.

Police say Lepore was naked when he walked onto John O’Neil’s property apparently at random and beat the 62-year-old O’Neil to death. Authorities say the attack was caught on a 911 call recording as O’Neil reported a man threatening him and acting strangely.

Lepore’s lawyer, Joseph Voccola, says Lepore was insane at the time and called the killing a tragic situation for both O’Neil’s family and Lepore’s family.
