MILFORD, Mass. (AP) - A popular Milford woman who was the town’s first female constable has been struck and killed by a tractor-trailer that authorities say left the scene.

Police say 65-year-old Barbara Clement was out walking at about 4 p.m. Thursday when she was struck.

The truck left the scene but the driver turned himself in about two hours later in Middleborough.

The truck driver’s name was not released because he had not been charged.

Chief Thomas O’Loughlin said it was possible that the driver did not know he had struck someone.

Clement, known to her friends as “Sarge,” served almost three decades in the Army National Guard and in 2010 was elected constable. As constable she serves all legal process, including notices, complaints and subpoenas.
