HURRICANE, W.Va. (AP) - Officials in Putnam County have approved new rules to allow alcohol consumption at two facilities in Hurricane’s Valley Park.

Local news outlets report that the county’s Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously approved rules on Thursday to allow alcohol consumption at the Valley Park Commons and the Community Center with prior approval.

Executive director of Putnam County Parks and Recreation Scott Williamson would have the authority to approve the use of alcohol at events such as weddings. Such events would first have to be approved by the commission’s planning committee and board.

Teays Valley Baptist Church pastor Chad Esteep attended the commission’s meeting and objected to the new rules, saying the park wasn’t a bar.

Commission chairman Joe Tyree said the new rules work for all people in the county.
