PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say an officer shot and wounded a man when he brandished a knife and advanced toward the officer.

Sgt. Vince Lewis says the incident occurred early Friday morning when an officer approached a man matching the description of a robbery suspect.

Lewis says the wounded man was taken to a hospital and that details on his injuries aren’t immediately available.

The officer who shot the man wasn’t injured.

The shooting happened North 33rd Avenue and West Deer Valley Road.
