SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - State officials have launched an investigation into a Spokane business after two ammonia leaks at the facility prompted evacuations and road closures.

The Spokesman-Review reports (https://bit.ly/2ck9rsM ) that Washington Department of Labor and Industries spokeswoman Elaine Fischer says an inspector was at Johanna Beverage Company on Thursday. She says the company doesn’t have any previous safety complaints on file.

The first leak occurred Saturday and caused fire crews to evacuate nearby homes and businesses. Eight employees were sickened and one was hospitalized.

A second leak on Wednesday was much larger and resulted in a portion of Interstate 90 being shut down for nearly an hour. Only minor symptoms were reported and no one required treatment.

A representative from the beverage company declined to comment Thursday.
