MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - The police and fire departments in Meridian will receive pay raises in two phases beginning this fall.

The Meridian Star reports (https://bit.ly/2cQX72C) that the Meridian City Council voted Tuesday to allow the pay hikes in two installments. The two departments will split $730,000 for a total of $1.2 million for fiscal year 2017 as part of a $55 million budget approved by the council.

That budget includes a $38 million general fund budget and $17 million for water and sewer.

The pay increase affects detectives and below in the police department as well as regular firefighters and senior firefighters in the fire department.

The initial pay raise is due in October, while the second takes effect in January or February 2017.
