PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Petersburg’s treasurer has defended his strategy of publicizing the names of delinquent taxpayers in a local newspaper and says another wave of names is coming next month.

News outlets report Kevin A. Brown said at a public forum Monday that his strategy has helped the city collect at least $2 million in unpaid taxes since he had the names published in The Progress-Index in April to help the city get out of about $18 million in debt. He says the city is still missing about $8 million in unpaid real estate and personal property taxes.

At the forum Monday, residents accused officials of making excuses and not taking responsibility for getting the city into debt in the first place.

Brown says the city’s finance department needs better leaders.
