ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - School bus upkeep, safety and supervision have been topics of conversation since the school year started for Rapides Parish.

The Town Talk reports (https://townta.lk/2cZ1VU0) the school board has approved the $3.2 million purchase of new buses. Board member Steve Berry said it is an investment in safety that he suggested when the district had a general fund budget surplus at the end of the last school year.

Of the 35 buses that will be purchased, 13 new 71-passenger buses will replace 13 aged-out buses still in use on regular bus routes. The other 22 buses will be added to the activity fleet.

The board also approved putting $600,000 into a Capital Outlay Fund that will help purchase buses in the future.
