SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - The executive editor of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune has been promoted to senior vice president for news at Gatehouse Media, the newspaper’s parent company.

In a news release Wednesday, the company said Bill Church will direct the Austin, Texas-based news operations at Gatehouse, which publishes 125 daily newspapers and a total of 620 community and business publications.

Church joined the Herald-Tribune in January 2013 and was given the role of southeast regional editor for Gatehouse in June 2015. Previously, he spent almost 23 years in editorial positions at Gannett newspapers.

During Church’s tenure at the Florida paper, a joint project between the Herald-Tribune and the Tampa Bay Times earned the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for investigative journalism.

He was recently installed as president of the Associated Press Media Editors.
