ECRU, Miss. (AP) - Ecru Mayor Mark Baldwin has submitted his resignation to the Ecru Board of Aldermen.

Alderman Glen Denton, who serves as vice-mayor, said Tuesday he was notified by phone that Baldwin had turned in his resignation Monday afternoon.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2cTjMvp) Denton was told Baldwin resigned for health reasons.

The newspaper reports Baldwin, who was elected to the Ecru Mayor’s office in 2013, could not be reached for comment.

Denton said the Ecru Board of Aldermen called a special meeting Tuesday night to officially accept the mayor’s resignation and consider what action is outlined by state statute regarding filling the mayoral post vacancy. A special called election will be held Nov. 1 with a qualifying deadline of 20 days prior to the election.
