PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - An attorney representing a fired Pittsfield police officer says his client was terminated because of unfounded charges initiated by the department.

The Berkshire Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/2cwQ7Yj ) Dale Eason was fired from the force earlier this month after an investigation into his conduct during a February shoplifting arrest.

Attorney Timothy Burke says the 20-year department veteran was fired because of embellished charges and he accused the department of retaliating against his client. He says the case is heading to arbitration.

The department didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.

Investigators say Eason used excessive force to remove a female shoplifting suspect from the back of his cruiser. The investigation concluded Eason wasn’t truthful in saying why he removed the woman from the back seat of the cruiser.
