CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) - A federal judge has set a sentencing date for the former chief of one of the country’s largest suburban police departments, who admitted under a plea deal to beating a suspect who stole sex toys and pornography from the New York officer’s sport utility vehicle.

Former Suffolk County Police Chief James Burke pleaded guilty on Long Island earlier this year to violating civil rights and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

He’s expected to get over four years in prison at his Nov. 2 sentencing. Burke could’ve faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted at trial.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/2cvx1Sl ) the judge on Wednesday also approved Burke’s request to replace his current attorney, Joseph Conway, with John Meringolo.

Conway and Meringolo declined to comment.

Burke has been jailed without bail.
