CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A Los Angeles developer has received initial approval for a new luxury hotel on the Charleston waterfront where the South Carolina Ports Authority has its offices.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (https://bit.ly/2dhmYPv ) that a city zoning board approved the plan for the 225-room hotel Wednesday.

Lowe Enterprises hopes to have the hotel open in four years.

The project still needs several other approvals, including a green light from the city’s Board of Architectural Review.

The Ports Authority is selling the property and moving its headquarters to the Wando Terminal in Mount Pleasant to be closer to port operations. The authority headquarters have been in the downtown building for about 40 years.
