GRETNA, La. (AP) - A 63-year-old Waggaman man has been convicted of raping a 35-year-old woman who said he assaulted her while she was trying to sleep off a drug binge in December 2014, Jefferson Parish District Attorney Paul Connick Jr. said.

Marcel was convicted Wednesday of simple rape, and faces up to 25 years in prison when Judge Conn Regan sentences him Sept. 30, Connick said in a news release.

The victim testified Tuesday that she had known Marcel about 10 years, occasionally used drugs with him and had dated one of his brothers. Marcel let her sleep in his apartment on Dec. 5, 2014, to “detox,” she said.

She said she woke from a sharp, uncomfortable pain, she flinched, and Marcel flinched and rolled over as if he was sleeping.

The woman said she called her mother to pick her up, but did not report the rape for 11 days. She testified, “I didn’t know if anybody would believe me … because I’m an addict.”
