FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) - The stepmother of a 4-year-old upstate New York girl who was seriously hurt has been charged with felony assault for allegedly causing the girl’s injuries.

The Post-Star of Glen Falls reports that 22-year-old Marissa Bickford-Rice of Fort Edward was charged early Thursday with reckless assault of a child after an investigation by the Washington County Sheriff’s office and state police.

Authorities said the child was transported to Albany Medical Center and placed on life support Wednesday evening, suffering from a brain hemorrhage and fractured skull.

Washington County District Attorney Tony Jordan told the paper that Bickford-Rice had “taken some accountability.” She was arraigned with counsel before Fort Edward Town Justice Joseph Malvuccio and sent to Washington County Jail on $250,000 cash bail.

The defense has waived a preliminary hearing.
