BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Students at the University of Vermont were surprised to find the recent addition of a Black Lives Matter flag on the school’s Burlington campus.

WCAX-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2de9PpK ) the BLM flag, which is being sponsored by the Student Government Association, first appeared on Thursday and will remain in its place of prominence through the weekend.

The flag is flying next to the Vermont state flag and the American flag near UVM’s student center.

Student Government President Jason Maulucci says the flag was put up to show symbolic support for the school community with so many struggling with violence and the search for justice.

Freshman Mariel Morel says she felt the display was needed emotionally in the wake of recent police shootings in Charlotte, North Carolina and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
