RINGTOWN, Pa. (AP) - The coroner’s office says a man who refused to surrender while keeping his 2-year-old daughter with him has apparently killed himself in his parents’ central Pennsylvania home.

The Schuylkill (SKOOL’-kil) County coroner plans an autopsy Friday on the body of 33-year-old Daniel Howard, though officials believe he died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

A state police Special Emergency Response Team surrounded the home in Ringtown early Thursday afternoon after a report that Howard was suicidal and refusing to leave the home with his child.

Authorities believe Howard shot himself about 4:45 p.m. after first releasing the child unharmed.

Police haven’t said what prompted the standoff.

Howard was from Hazle Township. Ringtown is about 60 miles northeast of Harrisburg.
