HBO host Bill Maher called Colin Kaepernick an “idiot” Wednesday morning, saying the San Francisco 49ers quarterback should stick to football.

“#colinkapernick is an idiot,” the comedian tweeted to his 5.24 million followers, misspelling the quarterback’s last name.

“I support his protest, but stick to what u know: kneeling and interceptions, and then look up ‘false equivalency,’” Mr. Maher wrote.

Mr. Maher’s comments appeared to contradict what he said on his HBO show earlier this month, when he defended Mr. Kaepernick’s First Amendment rights.

“What people died and fought for was for his right to do that,” he said. “It seems like the right-wing defines what patriotism is, and then if you do something different you’re not patriotic. You know what I don’t like about sport events? I don’t like the big celebration of militarism — the flyovers of the jets and all that [expletive]. I’m just trying to watch a game, I don’t want to be reminded of all that.”

African-American NFL players across the country have joined Mr. Kaepernick in protesting against racial injustice in the U.S. by taking a knee or raising a power fist during the national anthem.

The protests earned support from civil rights leaders and President Obama, landing Mr. Kaepernick a cover story in Time magazine’s Oct. 3 issue.

Mr. Maher didn’t say what sparked his criticism of Mr. Kaepernick, but the quarterback most recently made headlines after he slammed Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump following their first presidential debate.

“Both are proven liars and it almost seems like they’re trying to debate who’s less racist,” he said, The Hill reported. “And at this point, you have to pick the lesser of two evils. But in the end, it’s still evil.”
