RICHMOND, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island man is facing charges after police say he stole a dog from outside a restaurant while the animal’s owner was distracted.

The Westerly Sun reports (https://bit.ly/2bLSad8) 44-year-old Craig Malo, of Richmond, is charged with stealing an animal.

Police say it happened Aug. 25 in the parking lot of the Dragon Palace restaurant.

Police say the dog’s owner was making a phone call outside the restaurant when his 10-year-old bichon frise named Riley disappeared.

A witness reported that a man grabbed the dog and put it in his truck. The man told the witness he was a police officer and would take the dog “right to the station.”

Riley was found unharmed.

It’s unclear whether Malo has a lawyer. Online public records didn’t list a number for Malo.
