PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A new nonprofit has launched in Maine with the goal of encouraging the state’s newest residents to vote in elections and make their voices heard in Augusta.

The New Mainers Alliance announced its formation Thursday at Portland City Hall. The organization is comprised of representatives from Maine’s Iraqi, Congolese, Sudanese, South Sudanese and Somali immigrant communities, among others.

Leaders say the New Mainers seek to organize the civic work of those immigrant communities under one umbrella.

Elmuatz Abdelrahim, one of the nonprofit’s officers, says integrating the immigrant community into society begins with a civic engagement process that explains how they can get involved and have a voice.

Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling says it’s a good thing any time a group decides to become more active politically.
