SHANNON, Miss. (AP) - An inmate’s leg was cut in half when he was standing behind a stopped garbage truck that was hit by a car.

Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson tells the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/2cymRl1 ) that the 21-year-old inmate was wearing a bright orange jumpsuit and helping collect garbage Tuesday morning near the town of Shannon. He was standing behind the truck when a midsized passenger vehicle failed to stop.

Johnson says the crash severed the inmate’s leg around his knee. His name was not immediately released.

An investigation continues, and Johnson says a blood test will show whether the 24-year-old car driver was impaired.

He says the car’s computer will show the speed and whether the driver tried to stop.

No charges were immediately filed.
