EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A construction worker who was helping to transfer fuel from underground diesel tanks to new above-ground ones near a school was burned when an explosion occurred.

The accident occurred around 9:25 a.m. Wednesday at the Egg Harbor Township school district’s transportation facility, which is next to the H. Russell Swift School.

Police say the worker, 29-year-old township resident Joseph Palmieri, was cutting into an underground tank when the explosion occurred. He was thrown about five feet by the blast, which sent flames shooting up about 30 feet.

Palmieri suffered first- and second-degree burns on the right side of his body. He was treated at a hospital, but further details on his condition were not disclosed.

Another worker, 31-year-old Brian Cop of Beachwood, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
