EASTLAND, Texas (AP) - A West Texas sheriff’s deputy has been killed in a head-on collision while driving his SUV patrol vehicle to work.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says 73-year-old Eastland County sheriff’s Deputy Kenneth Maltby died in the accident around 8 a.m. Wednesday.
The DPS says a pickup truck driven by 23-year-old Colton James Conger of Eastland was eastbound on Farm Road 570 when he swerved to avoid another vehicle and slammed head-on into Maltby’s sport utility vehicle.
Sheriff Wayne Bradford says Maltby, who lived near Desdemona, was on duty and driving to work when the wreck happened. The retired Dallas police officer died at the scene.
The DPS says Conger was hospitalized in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
