RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Board of Transportation has honored a ferry crew for its response to a fire on a charter boat in July.

A statement from the N.C. Department of Transportation on Thursday said the ferry Swan Quarter had just left Ocracoke on July 5 when it received a distress call from a local charter boat saying it was on fire.

Swan Quarter Capt. David Gaskill diverted from their course and went to the aid of the charter boat. Crew members on the ferry used a rescue boat to deliver fire extinguishers to the charter, which enabled its crew to put out the fire. The U.S. Coast Guard arrived shortly thereafter, and the ferry returned to its scheduled service.

The ferry crew members received an Extra Mile Award.
