PHOENIX (AP) - A 40-year-old Phoenix woman has been sentenced to over five years in prison in the 2014 stabbings of her two children.

Judge Sherry Stephens of Maricopa County Superior Court on Thursday sentenced Brenda Begay to five years and nine months in prison plus five years of supervised probation.

Begay pleaded guilty in August to attempted child abuse and aggravated assault after previously pleading not guilty to attempted murder and other charges.

Police say Begay’s 12-year-old daughter woke up to find that she’d been stabbed in the chest and that a 13-year-old son had multiple stab wounds to the chest and a cut on his wrist.

Begay’s case at one point was dismissed when she was declared mentally incompetent to stand trial. However, charges were refiled after she was found competent.
