ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A man in a western Alaska community shot and wounded a village police officer and then killed himself.

Alaska State Troopers say 24-year-old Harold Paniyak (PAN-ee-ak) of Chevak (CHEE-vak) fired at the officer and then died by suicide.

Troopers in Bethel received a report on the shootings shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The name of the village police officer was not immediately released.

The officer was medically evacuated with life-threatening injuries to a hospital in Anchorage.

Troopers are in Chevak investigating.

Chevak is a village of just more than 1,000 people on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.
