SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Salt Lake City police officer has been injured after jumping off a freeway overpass while chasing a suspect.

Detective Greg Wilking says the officer spotted a man driving a stolen vehicle on Wednesday night and tried to pull him over, but the man got out of the car and ran onto Interstate 15.

Wilking says the man jumped off the freeway into a small grove of trees and the officer tried to do the same, but didn’t manage to land in a tree. The officer was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Wilking says the officer is expected to recover.

Other officers caught up with the 20-year-old suspect, who was booked for fleeing and resisting arrest. He also had two felony warrants.
