UTEP (1-0) at No. 11 Texas (1-0), 7 p.m. (Longhorn Network)

Line: Texas by 28 ½.

Series Record: Texas leads 4-0.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Texas tries to follow-up on a huge opening win over Notre Dame that quickly created lofty expectations in coach Charlie Strong’s third season. A stumble against what should be an overmatched opponent would be a huge letdown. A UTEP win would be one of the biggest in program history.

KEY MATCHUP

UTEP cornerbacks Nik Needham and Kalon Beverly vs. Texas WR John Burt. Burt is the speedster who quarterback Shane Buechele looks for on deep routes on the sideline. They connected for a 72-yard touchdown against Notre Dame and would have had an 85-yarder, but Burt dropped a perfectly-thrown ball.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

UTEP: RB Aaron Jones. His 249 yards rushing against New Mexico State was the best in the nation in the first week of the season. Jones’ 11th career 100-yard game marked an impressive return after missing the final 10 games of 2015 with a foot injury. Jones has 2,590 career yards and is running behind a veteran offensive line

Texas: QB Buechele. The first freshman quarterback to start a Texas season opener since Bobby Layne in 1944 passed for 280 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another. Texas fans are excited that they may have solved their years-long dilemma at quarterback.

FACTS & FIGURES

Texas P Michael Dickson averaged 55 yards on six punts against Notre Dame … Texas is ranked for the first time under Strong. The Longhorns’ last appearance in the AP Top 25 was in 2013 under Mack Brown … If UTEP can find a soft spot, it could be the Texas secondary which gave up five touchdown passes to Notre Dame.
