FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) - The Army’s largest training installation is hosting a series of lectures leading up to the celebration of Fort Jackson’s 100-year anniversary in 2017.

Columbia mayor Bob Coble is scheduled to give the opening remarks on Friday at 3 p.m. at the NCO Club on the role South Carolina’s state capital has played in the founding of the Army post.

South Carolina historian Fritz Hamer is also speaking about the early years of the installation and its relations with the community.

The lectures are the first in a quarterly series of talks on the history of the sprawling Army installation outside Columbia.

Other events include museum exhibits, sporting events and the annual Army Birthday Ball dedicated to celebrating 100 years of service.
