EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The NCAA has granted Michigan State linebacker Ed Davis an extra year of eligibility to play this season.

Davis missed the entire 2015 season following a knee injury. The 12th-ranked Spartans had been hopeful he would be able to play this year but were waiting on the official word. Davis earned a degree in sociology last month.

He has played in 40 games for Michigan State, starting 12. He has 11 sacks.

Coach Mark Dantonio said in a statement Friday that it’s good to see Davis rewarded after missing last season.

The Spartans are off this weekend before playing at Notre Dame on Sept. 17.
