EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The first of two crumbling overpasses being replaced as part of Gov. Gina Raimondo’s RhodeWorks plan will be closed to traffic this weekend as the project begins.

Rhode Island Department of Transportation officials say the East Shore Expressway Bridge in East Providence will be closed from 8 p.m. Friday until the new span opens on the morning of Sept. 13.

The bridge connects Interstate 95 East with state Route 114 South. A section of Warren Avenue that passes directly under the bridge will also be closed during the same time period.

RIDOT workers are using a new method for the project that called for the complete construction of the new span before the old bridge is demolished. Once that occurs, the new overpass will be moved into the proper location.
