CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Exports from the Charleston area were a record $6.5 billion last year according to new government figures.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (https://bit.ly/2cb4pMA ) figures from the International Trade Administration show that the value of exports from the area increased more than 10 percent from 2014.

Boeing’s export of jetliners made in North Charleston get much of the credit.

The numbers show the Charleston-North Charleston metro area ranked 45th nationally in the value of exported goods. U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker says exports will continue to be a source of growth for the Charleston economy.

Key exports from the area include transportation equipment, electronic products, machinery, chemicals and paper.
