PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine hunters are about to find out who will benefit from the state’s decision to bump up the number of deer hunting permits it is giving out this year.

This year the state increased the number of “any deer” hunting permits by 60 percent. The state will give out more than 45,000 of the permits, and is holding a lottery for them on Friday.

The state decided to increase the number of hunting permits because so many deer survived the mild winter.

The permits allow hunting of antlerless deer by firearm. The state uses the hunt to control the population of deer.

The main firearms season for deer begins on Halloween and runs until Nov. 26.
