GARDEN CITY, Mich. (AP) - A man suspected of a series of break-ins and sexual assaults in southeastern Michigan has been charged in Garden City.

Ikeie R. Smith was denied bond during a court appearance Friday on charges of home invasion and criminal sexual conduct. The 32-year-old Redford man is accused of raping a woman before dawn last November while her husband was asleep in another room.

Smith asked for a court-appointed lawyer.

Police say he’s a suspect in sexual assaults in at least eight communities since 2011. Smith’s mother, Janet Freeman, says she supports her son but believes he’s in deep trouble.

Outside court, Freeman said: “Stick a fork in him. He’s done.”

His next court date is Sept. 19. Police plan to talk more about Smith at a news conference Monday in Dearborn.
