LOMITA, Calif. (AP) - The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department says a man who fired at deputies and was wounded by return fire is expected to survive.

The shooting occurred Thursday evening in Lomita after deputies tried to stop a vehicle for traffic violations.

The department says the motorist tried to drive off but crashed into a car in a parking lot, ran into a liquor store while holding a handgun, then emerged and fired at deputies, who returned fire. The deputies were not injured.

A woman was also detained after she ran from the car.

The Sheriff’s Department says the handgun was recovered at the scene.
