BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police have released the identity of an armed home invasion suspect who somehow eluded officers who were staked out at an apartment complex in Burlington’s New North End.

A manhunt is now underway to apprehend 24-year-old Dahmir Simmons, who is wanted in connection with Thursday’s break-in and assault.

Officers were first dispatched to the Cayuga Court residence around 2 a.m. following a fight allegedly involving Simmons and another man. Police say Simmons threatened the man and then pistol-whipped him.

Police were called back to the apartment around 8 a.m. after receiving reports that Simmons had returned. Believing he was inside, police closed down the neighborhood and students at a nearby school were kept indoors.

Chief Brandon del Pozo says it turns out Simmons wasn’t there. His present whereabouts are unknown.
