MANLIUS, N.Y. (AP) - Police in central New York used a helicopter and night-vision gear to locate a suicidal person who was in a tree about 100 feet (30 meters) off the ground.

The unusual search-and-rescue operation happened at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the town of Manlius, near Syracuse.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports (https://bit.ly/2qqLUcI ) that an Onondaga County sheriff’s department helicopter was dispatched to a wooded area to help Manlius police search for a suicidal person.

The helicopter crew used an infrared camera and night-vision gear to look for the person.

Crew members spotted the person in a tree and guided police on the ground to the person.

Firefighters helped with securing the person, who was not identified.

The person was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
