AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s greenhouses, nurseries and gardening businesses are getting ready to celebrate all things that bloom.

Maine Greenhouse and Nursery Day is scheduled for May 6. The state Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry says dozens of family-owned horticultural businesses will use the event to kick off the growing season.

The day will include demonstrations, tours and giveaways. Gov. Paul LePage says horticulture is a fast-growing industry in Maine.

LePage says horticulture sales have increased more than 40 percent since 2009. That is double the national average. The number of horticulture operations in the state has also increased by more than 25 percent.
