LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) - La Crosse police have identified a convicted felon as the armed carjacker who was fatally shot by officers.

Authorities say 54-year-old Roger Burzinski of Green Bay stole a Chevy Trailblazer at Houska Park on Sunday after confronting a woman at gunpoint. Police say the mother was able to get her 3-year-old out of the vehicle, but Burzinski stole the SUV with her 1-year-old child still inside.

Officers located the vehicle and began a short pursuit which ended when Burzinski crashed into a parked car. Police say two officers saw the suspect had a gun and shot him. The child was not hurt.

The officers are identified as Andrew Adey and Stephen Hughes. Both are on standard administrative leave.

The La Crosse Tribune reports Burzinski was released from prison in September.
