NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a man who climbed over the rails on the lower level of New York’s Verrazano-Narrows Bridge has been rescued after a five-hour standoff.

Officers with the Emergency Services Unit talked to the man, in his early 30s, until he agreed to come back over the railing. He had a backpack full of weights and rocks that he slid off his shoulders and let fall before coming back over.

Sergeant John Jacoby says he and other officers took turns, trying to find common ground and broker trust. He says the man was worried he’d be arrested or harmed but eventually believed police and came back. He said the man didn’t say specifically what prompted him to want to jump.

The Verrazano suspension bridge connects Brooklyn to Staten Island.
