BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - An eastern Montana man awaiting sentencing for killing a woman in December tried to escape from the Valley County jail in Glasgow.

Sheriff Vern Buerkle tells The Billings Gazette (https://bit.ly/2iBrNcG ) that Jay Witkowski and another inmate overpowered an officer late Thursday, took his keys and tried to get outside. The attempt was unsuccessful.

Buerkle says the two inmates were charged Friday with attempted escape, aggravated kidnapping and intimidation. They are being held in solitary confinement.

Witkowski, formerly of Shepherd, pleaded guilty two weeks ago to the December 2016 death of Evelyn Garcia. Prosecutors said he stabbed her, hit her with a tire iron and then struck her with a car. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 2.
