SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - State officials say nearly $3 million will be spent to upgrade a popular 55-year-old pool at an upstate New York park.

Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey announced Tuesday that the bathhouse complex at Saratoga Spa State Park’s Peerless Pool will be replaced with smaller but easier to navigate buildings with more green space around the Olympic-sized pool.

Officials say the aging condition of the complex requires the rehab work to begin on Monday. That means the pool will close for the season after Sunday’s hours, three weeks before its usual Labor Day closing.

The project is expected to be finished by next summer.

The park’s other swimming spot, the smaller Victoria Pool, will remain open daily at a reduced admission fee through Labor Day, then be open Fridays to Sundays through Sept. 17.
