PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia police say officers shot and wounded a man who opened fire on them during a standoff, sending stray bullets into a nearby home.

Police say they were called to investigate a report of an armed man on Monday afternoon and found 30-year-old Jose Gonzales with a handgun attempting to enter a car later identified to be stolen in a gunpoint carjacking.

Officers say they ordered Gonzales to drop his weapon, but he instead fired two shots in their direction. Officers fired back, hitting him in the legs and torso.

Gonzales was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Police say criminal charges are pending.

A neighbor says she was home with her four children when a bullet came through her window. She and her children were not hurt.
