CNN host Anderson Cooper said his Twitter account was hacked Wednesday morning, resulting in a head-turning tweet that called President Trump a “pathetic loser.”

Mr. Cooper’s Twitter account fired back after Mr. Trump tweeted that he knew Republican Roy Moore would lose the Senate special election in Alabama to Democrat Doug Jones.

“The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election,” the president wrote early Wednesday. “I was right! Roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!”

Mr. Cooper’s Twitter account responded: “Oh Really? You endorsed him you tool! Pathetic loser,” according to a screenshot captured by The Hill.

The tweet was deleted, and CNN and Mr. Cooper explained that the account had been compromised.

The “Anderson Cooper 360°” host said he hadn’t sent out a tweet in “days.”

CNN said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that Mr. Cooper’s Twitter account was hacked after the host’s longtime assistant left his phone unattended at a gym in New York.

“Geolocation tools confirm that the tweet in question was not sent from Anderson Cooper’s phone. Anderson was in Washington, and we have proof the tweet was sent from New York, from a phone belonging to his assistant,” the network told The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple.

“His assistant inadvertently left his phone unlocked and unattended at the gym early this morning, and someone took the phone and sent the tweet. His assistant, who has worked with Anderson for more than a decade, is the only other person with access to Anderson’s Twitter account.”
