SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Relatives of a man who was fatally shot inside a Syracuse home this week say he was a father of three young children and had gotten engaged just days before he was killed.

Syracuse police say 33-year-old James Smith Jr. was shot around 1 a.m. Tuesday inside a home on Merriman Avenue. He later died at Upstate University Hospital.

Smith’s sister, Tanjula Smith, told Syracuse.com that her brother was a father of three children, ages 1, 7 and 8. She says her sibling texted his fiancée last week, asking her to marry him. She said yes.

Tanjula Smith says the shooting occurred inside her parents’ home.

Police aren’t confirming her account of the shooting. Officials say the investigation is continuing. No arrests have been reported.
