BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) - Police in Bethlehem Township say a gunman who barricaded himself inside a house is dead and local residents are being allowed to return to their homes.

Police made the announcement on Twitter late Friday, almost nine hours after the standoff began. No other details were released.

Police were forced to back off as gunshots rang out about 2 p.m. Friday when they went to the home to help a woman who lay motionless in the front yard.

Police Chief Dan Pancoast says he has no other information about her.

He says a state police armored vehicle had to be brought in to rescue an officer and a resident.

Neighbor Jennifer Gentry, who lives about a block away, tells The Morning Call the vehicle was riddled with bullets.
